Sunflower pawpaw was selected from the wild in Chanute, KS, by Milo Gibson in 1970. It has played a vital role in helping lay the foundation of the current pawpaw movement and is the parent to the notable ‘Prima 1216’ cultivar. It is one of the rare, partially self-fertile pawpaw cultivars and so is a good choice if you only have room for one, single pawpaw tree. (Hand-pollination may help with higher fruit set). If Sunflower pawpaw is grown with other cultivars of pawpaws, fruit size will increase with hand-thinning. It bears medium-sized, thick, creamy fleshed fruit and has a strong mango/apricot,/pineapple/banana flavor with hints of vanilla. Ripens mid-late season.

Other Considerations

Pawpaws require more than 1 cultivar for cross-pollination (This means you need at least two trees with different names. We recommend planting 3 to ensure excellent pollination.)

Beautiful Beginnings pawpaws have highly-developed and extensive root systems that set your tree up for success from the very beginning by helping it to anchor well and grow vigorously with proper care.

All pawpaws trees are shipped as potted plants in the Spring or early Summer.
