Madhava Mulberry

A “Beautiful Beginnings Special Cultivar”, the mother tree is thriving in less-than-ideal conditions, producing an abundance of especially juicy, super sweet berries. Has a semi-dwarf growth habit.

Grafted onto Morus rubra (native Red Mulberry)

Spacing: 20 foot radius if allowed to grow full size; 10-15 foot radius if pruned

USDA Zones: 5-8 (estimate)

Found as a chance seedling thriving in the urban waysides of the I-64 expressway in Louisville, KY and introduced by my former nursery, “Madhava” is a survivor and a thriver. The tree produces an abundance of super sweet berries which lack the usual mulberry “tang” and are also softer and juicier than most other mulberries. As a result of the wonderful juice content of these berries, they are not recommended for fresh market but are great eaten fresh, frozen and used in processing. The tree seems to have a semi-dwarf growth habit.
