Exceptional Quality and Size
Developed at the Nikitsky Botanical Garden in 1959 on the beautiful Crimean peninsula of Ukraine, “Rosseyanka” is a popular cold-hardy hybrid persimmon. (A cross between the hardy American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) and the sweet Asian persimmon (Diospyros kaki).)
As a hybrid, the fruits are larger than the native American persimmon, often reaching nearly 3 inches in size, while the tree is much more cold hardy than the Asian persimmons. The tree itself takes after the American persimmon in growth habit and leaf shape. The fruits have a delectable blend of the sweet, rich, spicy flavors found in both types of persimmons and will wrinkle when ripe as with the native American persimmons but will hold on the tree much longer, often into January, similar to the Asian persimmons. The fruits also tend to be seedless and the foliage is a striking orange in autumn. “Rosseyanka” is a hybrid persimmon of the highest quality and is an excellent choice for any one wanting to grow a cold-hardy cultivar of hybrid persimmon.
