Creating Beautiful Beginnings
The seed was sown at a young age.
Growing up on a four-generation dairy farm in Wooster, Ohio, I’ve always been a “farm girl.” Some would say it’s in my blood. Never in my wildest imaginings could I have predicted that I would become an agriculturist—a farmer—myself one day. In fact, in my teens, I promised myself that I would never marry nor become a farmer. I knew the cost firsthand and wasn’t willing to pay it.
After graduating from college, I moved to Crimea, Ukraine, with two college friends and began a seven-year adventure of living and serving orphans in government orphanages there. Oh, the stories I could tell…
Upon my return to the States, I took a position as director of a nonprofit that served at-risk children in the same city in Crimea, Ukraine, where I had been living. This position took me from my family’s farm in Ohio to Louisville, Kentucky. It was there that I met my former husband, who had always dreamed of becoming a farmer.
Though farming was not a dream I shared, I was willing to support him and help make his dream a reality. Together, we built two farms by hand from scratch, became year-round market farmers, and created the highly successful Peaceful Heritage Nursery. I found myself becoming a horticulturist and, without realizing it, a farmer at the same time.
Life has a funny way of teaching us the lessons we need to learn. Over the last 10+ years, I have become a skilled horticulturist and nurserywoman, and I am continuously learning and improving my skills and knowledge. I have come to understand that there are as many different types of farmers as there are varieties of pawpaws, and I have come to not only accept but deeply appreciate the fact that I have become one.
At the start of 2023, when life taught me yet another one of its “funny” lessons, I unexpectedly found myself at a crossroads where I could choose to go in any direction I wanted. A fresh start. A new beginning.
I ultimately chose to remain a farmer and create my own beautiful beginning with a new nursery. In doing so, I pay homage to all farmers, past, present, and yet to come, and most especially to my father, grandparents, and great-grandparents. I am honored to be counted among you.
To my father, who is part of a true “salt of the earth” generation, thank you for showing me what it means to sacrifice and to do what is necessary in every moment, regardless of convenience or how you might feel. I cannot tell you the number of times you have been my single-pointed inspiration when performing farm tasks I would have given anything not to be doing in that moment.
To my “Sweets,” I am so profoundly proud to be your mother. You are an immensely brave, strong, and bright star in this world. Sowing the same seeds in you that have been sown in me by the generations that have come before, I pray that your roots find deep, rich soil in which to grow and that your life will be one of abundance, perseverance, and love.
Mi Amor, you are my life’s happiest surprise, and I could not have done any of this without you. Thank you for being the light beyond the darkness, the love behind the kiss, and the laughter amidst the tears. You are my answer to prayer, and together we are creating our own beautiful beginning.
Our Growing Philosophy
At Beautiful Beginnings Nursery, we believe that growing exceptional plants starts with paying attention to the soil, the plants, and the land around us. We take a thoughtful, hands-on approach to growing and are continually learning, experimenting, and refining our practices.
100%
Organic Principles
While we are not currently certified organic, all of our growing practices are rooted in organic and sustainable principles. We strive to work with nature rather than against it, using thoughtful growing practices that support healthy plants, healthy soil, and the long-term health of our land.
We believe that how we grow matters—not only for the plants we send to our customers, but also for the land entrusted to our care.
100%
High Quality
We take great pride in sending our customers healthy, vigorous, high-quality plants. Because we operate as a specialty nursery, we can give our plants the individual attention they deserve throughout the growing process.
We maintain selective standards when evaluating our plants, paying attention to factors such as root development, trunk thickness, top growth, overall vigor, and the plant’s readiness to thrive beyond the nursery.
100%
Specialized & Small Scale
We are a specialty fruit tree nursery, and our focus is on growing and offering unique varieties that may be difficult to find elsewhere.
Our smaller-scale approach allows us to be more intentional about what we grow and how we grow it. Rather than focusing on volume alone, we focus on producing plants we’re proud to put our name behind.
We are continually learning, trying new things, and expanding our knowledge. That process is part of what makes growing so rewarding.
Growing Our Future…
Beautiful Beginnings Nursery is continuing to grow, and we’re excited about what the future holds. As we expand our growing space and establish our roots in Danville, Kentucky, we’re working toward a broader selection of unique and exceptional fruit trees and specialty plants.
Our goal is simple: to grow high-quality plants, share what we’re learning, and help more people experience the satisfaction of growing and harvesting their own food.
As the nursery grows, we’re committed to staying true to the principles that brought us here in the first place: growing with intention, focusing on quality, and continually learning along the way.
There is always more to discover in horticulture, and that’s part of what makes this journey so rewarding. We’re grateful to have you along for the ride and proud to have you as part of our “Team Green.”
What We’re Growing
Our collection continues to evolve as we grow and introduce new varieties. We focus on specialty fruit trees and plants that offer something a little different, whether that’s an unusual fruit, an underappreciated native species, or a variety that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
Our current offerings include pawpaws, persimmons, mulberries, elderberries, jujubes, figs, hardy almonds, and other specialty selections.
We’re continually experimenting, learning, and expanding our offerings so that you can discover exceptional plants to grow in your own garden, orchard, or homestead.
Some varieties may come and go from season to season, but our goal remains the same: to offer healthy, high-quality plants that we’re proud to grow and that we’re excited to share with you.
