A Year-Round Delight

Native to the eastern United States, Sweetbay Magnolia is an absolute delight year-round. It blooms later in the Spring (keeping it protected from late-Spring frosts) and continues through the earlier parts of Summer, exciting both people and pollinators with its luxuriously beautiful, creamy white flowers that exude an intoxicatingly sweet, lemony aroma.

It is distinguished from other magnolias because of the shimmering, silver underside on its glossy, dark green leaves, as well as its smaller, much more manageable size and shape.

Once the abundant flower show is over for the Summer, the tree transitions into developing it’s beautifully striking scarlet-red seed pods that add a whole new level of interest in late-Summer and Fall for humans and birds alike. It is considered a semi-evergreen tree meaning it will keep its leaves for some of the winter but will eventually drop them, especially in cooler/colder climates.

Being a moderately fast-growing, low-maintenance and adaptable tree that does well in many different growing habitats (from woodlands, to swamps, to yards and gardens), Sweetbay Magnolia is a perfect choice for those wanting to bring beauty, elegance and excitement to their space and is a personal favorite of ours at Beautiful Beginnings Nursery, which is why we are so happy to be offering it!

Other Considerations: Sweetbay Magnolias prefer moist, organic-rich soils, often grow as multi-trunked trees (though can easily be pruned to a single trunk), and require only one, annual fertilizing in the Spring.

Beautiful Beginnings Sweetbay Magnolias have highly-developed and extensive root systems that set your tree up for success from the very beginning by helping it to anchor well and grow vigorously with proper care.

All magnolias are shipped dormant and bareroot in the Spring or Autumn.
