The Epitome of Gourmet
The result of two men’s’ lifetime of work and commitment to their trade, “Windstar” was developed by Cliff England of England’s Orchard in Kentucky, and is a homage to the breeding work of Jerry Lehman of Terra Haute, IN. A cross between “Lehman’s Delight” (275-48)” x “275-50”, it leaves nothing to be desired from a pawpaw fruit or tree and stands as a testimony and inspiration to what is possible with collaboration and mastery of one’s craft.
Fruits are very large with “jumbo” fruits weighing in at well over 1½ pounds. The flavor is exceptionally sweet (nearly 22 Brix) and clean, lacking any of the muskiness or bitter aftertaste wild pawpaws are known for. Texture is silky smooth, very thick and custard-like.
The tree is productive and vigorous, though may not produce as many fruits as some other cultivars due to the sheer size of each fruit it produces. Fruits tend to set in pairs and have very low seed count. Ripens mid-season (September).
Key Features of Windstar:
- Collaboration between Jerry Lehman and Cliff England
- Large-Jumbo sized fruits
- Exceptionally sweet pulp
- No muskiness or bitter aftertaste
- Silky, thick texture
- Productive & Vigorous tree
- Fruits set in pairs
- Low seed count
- Ripens mid-season
USDA Zones: 5-8
Spacing: 8-10 foot centers (Requires closer spacing for better pollination.)
Other Considerations: Pawpaws require more than 1 cultivar for cross-pollination (This means you need at least two trees with different names. We recommend planting 3 to ensure excellent pollination.)
Beautiful Beginnings pawpaws have highly-developed and extensive root systems that set your tree up for success from the very beginning by helping it to anchor well and grow vigorously with proper care.
All pawpaws trees are shipped as potted plants in the Spring and Autumn.
