The Queen of the Mulberries
(Morus macrura)
Known as “Queen of the Mulberries”, Pakistan (or Himalayan) has a long and celebrated history. Originating in the Middle East and Central Asia, it has been used both for silkworm and fruit production. The tree bears heavy crops of 3-5 inch long, dark purple fruits that are prized for their sweet, complex flavor and non-staining properties beginning in July and extending through August. It is also known for its vigorous and beautiful growth habit making it an ideal choice for a shade or patio tree. Fun fact: Fruits can be eaten in the red-stage prior to turning black and are just as delicious, though with a slightly different flavor profile. Considered reliably resistant to popcorn disease in hot/humid climates.
Please Note: Pakistan is not an adaptable cultivar and will only grow in certain climates and temperatures. It requires relatively few chill hours (200) and will start breaking dormancy after a few warm days in winter. For places where winter temperatures go below 28 degrees F or where there is late Spring frosts, proper site selection and winter protection is a must. It is recommended to grow Pakistan as a container tree in climates that are not suitable but where it’s benefits are desired.
USDA Zone: 7-10
