Madhava Mulberry

A “Beautiful Beginnings Special Cultivar”, the mother tree is thriving in less-than-ideal conditions, producing an abundance of especially juicy, super sweet berries. Has a semi-dwarf growth habit.

USDA Zones: 5-8 (estimate)

Spacing: 20 foot centers if allowed to grow full size; 10-15 foot centers if kept pruned

Grafted onto Morus rubra (native Red Mulberry)

Other Considerations: Mulberries are self-fertile but will bear more fruit with cross-pollination. (This means if you buy one tree you will get a small amount of fruit but if you buy two or more trees, each with different names, you will get substantially more fruit.)

Found as a chance seedling thriving in the urban waysides of the I-64 expressway in Louisville, KY and introduced by my former nursery, “Madhava” is a survivor and a thriver. The tree produces an abundance of super sweet berries which lack the usual mulberry “tang” and are also softer and juicier than most other mulberries. As a result of the wonderful juice content of these berries, they are not recommended for fresh market but are great eaten fresh, frozen and used in processing. The tree seems to have a semi-dwarf growth habit.

Beautiful Beginnings mulberries have highly-developed and extensive root systems that set your tree up for success from the very beginning by helping it to anchor well and grow vigorously with proper care.

All mulberries are shipped dormant and bareroot in the Spring.
