Found at the USDA research station in Chico, CA, ‘GA-866’ boasts one of the highest sugar contents (brix) of any jujube on the market- up to 45% when fully ripened! It also bears some of the largest fruits reaching 1.5-2 inches long.
The fruits have a crisp texture with an apple-like flavor when eaten fresh once they’ve starting to turn a deep reddish-brown. As the fruits dry, they become darker and chewier which is where they get their traditional name of “Chinese dates”. This cultivar is recommended for warmer climates, zone 6 and warmer.
About Jujubes:
Jujube has an ancient history beginning over 4,000 years ago in Asia and is considered one of humanity’s oldest cultivated fruits. It spread through Asia, the Middle East and into Mediterranean Europe via the Silk Road, finally making its way to the United States in the 1920s by the Henry Heide Company. The ancients were well aware of the fruits’ many powerful medicinal properties which include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, acting as a sleep aid, increasing immune support and helping regulate blood sugar and heart stress.
The trees require at least 8 hours of full sun, a longer growing season, and adequate watering while still young. They do not need heavy fertilizing and do better with a balanced low NPK application. The aggressive, thorny root suckers need to be taken out or the grafted part will become overpowered by the seedling rootstock, UNLESS the tree is GA-866 which is propagated from tissue culture making the suckers the same genetics as the main tree. Jujubes respond well to being pruned and can be kept smaller if desired.
