An exciting new release to “pawp” onto the nursery scene, Ralph’s Whopper is a legendary pawpaw in the making. A chance seedling coming out of Kentucky State University’s best pawpaw orchard though not an official KSU release. After extracting the pulp, Jeremy Lowe, one of the leading pawpaw researchers at KSU, disposed of the seeds in his father Ralph’s compost pile. The following Spring, some seedlings sprouted up with a clear champion reigning among them.
The fruits have been described as reminiscent of bananas foster and is considered to be a great beginners’ pawpaw by the KSU research staff, as the flavor is mild better than some other highly popular cultivars. Ralph’s Whopper not only has great vigor in its growth habit but it is also proving to be quite productive from a young age. The fruits also ripens especially early (end of August here in Kentucky).
